Lots of updates!

Mr Cory Lippel's frame and fork are at the painters. He's getting a black with gold flake and gold lining at the lugs. Fork will be painted to match. Cory is racing in St. Pete in Feb and we hope the frame to be back in Tampa for a hand delivery during the race.

My nephew's BMX is FINALLY getting built. I wanted to build him and his sister bikes for the last few years. I've finally gotten it all the parts together, so the frame can be fabricated. He wants it blue and gold. So I figure the bars and fork will get a gold powder coat and the frame to get an electric blue.

Geared Quixxote 29er for Jimmy, underway!

Co-worker Jimmy has ordered a Quixxote 29er. This one will be a geared specific version designed around a 100mm Reba. This bike will be decked out with loads of 2011 XTR, and carbon fiber stuffs. This frame will have a curved DT for fork clearance and a curved TT for additional stand over. Everyone is stoked about this one!

Began work on Pete's Fixed Fight 4 prize frame. Pete won for 2010, but we only JUST began the process. Pete approved the frame drawing 2 days ago, and the front triangle is nearly together! I'd like to deliver this at this year's Fixed Fight 5, the Final Fight. Seattube is complete and the head & top tubes are ready for weldment.

A few projects have finished since my last post. Dave's Fixed Fight 3 "Prize Fighter" is completed and at the powder-coater.
I refinished an older Centurion for a friend, along with a new powder-coat.

I also built up a dirt-jumper that is yet to be named. The DJ is equipped with sliding dropouts for single speed use, but is fully capable of becoming a geared bicycle.

This is my first attempt at a wish-bone style seat stay configuration.
Fixed Fight 4 has also come and gone, and for 2010 I offered yet another customer frame to the victor. That person being Mr. Pete Young. We spoke briefly, but the gist is he is wanting a single speed cyclocross bike. Details are not nailed down, so the tubing selection hasn't even begun yet.

H2O Bosses are brazed in as well as his internal hub housing routing. I still need to add the fender eyelets, bridges and brake routing. BOMBER.

Brandon is out in Colorado now and riding his 650B Quisby.

And Mike is in Houston enjoying his 26" Qustom.
I used a set of Surly Instigator dropouts, but removed a large amount of material to bring the weight down.

Both bikes were a blast to build, and I am proud to now have folks riding my bikes in 4 states.
There are a few new bikes in the Queue, so keep coming back!

26" Hardtail.

Mike's hardtail is welded up. At least the front triangle. I haven't gone to bed before 3am yet this week. I was really rocking yesterday, and was just in the zone. Laying down some clean welds is ultra motivating. Images below.

I have some photography to work on this weekend, so I may not get to the rear tri until next week. We'll see. Like I said, it's going ultra smooth so I may be working on it sooner than expected.

I've finally gotten around to David's frame. This custom frame is the prize for Fix Fight 3 held in St Pete back in April. Dave went back and forth between a fixed frame or a cross frame, but has landed on a single speed road frame.
He'll be getting double butted tubing throughout, Tange chain stays, 1.125" headtube, and split dropouts so he can one day run a belt drive. It is the way of the future, and Dave will be prepared.
I began work yesterday, and welded the BB to the seat tube, and cobbled his seat tube lug as well. The head tube is cut to length and vent holes drilled. The HT will get some custom work done, too. And the seat tube isn't yet finished either. Stay tuned.

As the title states I have begun another frame.
Mr Mike wanted to go 26" hardtail and is replacing a Specialized Hardrock SS. Big time upgrade. Double butted crmo tubing through out and this time I am using some Surly Instigator dropouts. They will be getting drilled out to get rid of body fat. I've beend sitting on these for a couple years and this seems like a good project for them.

I managed to get the seat tube welded to the BB shell as well as the seat tube sleeve brazed on.

I got to use a new fixture for the seat tube/bb weld, and it produced a quick, straight result. I was using my frame fixture, but there were too many possible variables to cause a misalignment. I checked it afterward on my stone block I use for alignment and it was spot on! I'm working super late, so now it's time for a shower then bed.

The seat tube is finished, with an integrated seatpost clamp and H2O bosses. We are using a 73mm BB shell to increase tire clearance and keep a short CS length. Similar to a 26" wheeled MTB. The CS length will be variable since the dropouts will be a sliding style. I mitered the top tube at the seat tube, and next comes the Head tube's miter.

The line drawn on the TT inticates where the tube's wall thickness changes. It is important to be aware of this change. We're using OX Platinum for the main tubes to keep things strong and light weight for Mark!

Last night I also added cantilever mounts to a local guys Surly Steam Roller. Pete wanted better braking for skids on the polo court. He picked up his bike this after noon with a huge smile on his face. I added he mounts, installed a Avid brake, and Pete bought some very crazy handle bars off me for his newly modified Steamroller.

All of Mr. Marks tubing is in, in exception for his seat tube 'lug'. that will reinforce the seattube to prevent tube failure.
He will be using the new IRD sliding dropouts, modeled after the Eric Baar (of Ground Up Designs) slider. Mark wanted to keep this frame very clean and simple. He is coming from riding a BMW park bike with 24", so I wanted to go a little beefier than a standard XC design. I know this bike will get some air-time. Mark rides a FS Rocky Mountain with 26" wheels but all of his (2) hardtails are 24" wheeled bikes. This will become Mark's primary hardtail trail bike.

Brandon's frame is nearing completion. I made a bonehead move and ran out of Oxygen and didn't fill my tank for a week. So, I was a bit behind schedule finishing BK's frame. We have most everything finished besides putting the stays on and adding a disc brake stay bridge. BK' s frame has a der tab, but no housing stops, he'll be running full housing if he wants to go 1x9.
Mark's tubeset is in house and I am picking up some straight gauge 4130 to 'slug' his seat tube. Images will explain the process. Mark chose OX platnium for his main triangle, and we also got a set of the new "S" stays from True Temper for his build. SHould be light and rad.

I brought home a 2ton press so I can experiment with custom bending my own stays. Most of the stuff available pre-bent is a little too 'S' like for my seat stay styling (for MTBs anyway).

Brandon's Quisby

BK's Quisby is nearing completion. Tonight we mitered the chainstays, I finished up the front triangles welds, and tacked the stays. We needed to do some filing on the jig in order to achieve the proper bb drop. Has Bringheli already made this change? I couldn't get a drop out, with a deraileur hanger, low enough. I had to file a section of aluminum out- about 3mm.
Anyways, we got it all setup and I did my thing with TIG. I've been out of practice so my first few frames back to TIG was pretty sloppy. I've worked out the bugs of my machine and myself and the welds are looking as great as ever. Like riding a bike. Or, making a bike, rather.
Here is aquick snap shot of BK's Quisby with a peirced toptube. My battery died as I moved in for a close up. Sorry. He will have clearance for 2.1" Fire XC Pros in 650b with the wheel slammed. Move it back a tad and plenty-o-room for the 2.3" Neo. Brandon is coming from a road background, so I think the Wolverine or Racing Ralph will suit his style the best. Thanks for stopping by!

Brandon's frame is coming together nicely. We've decided to do a pierced TT at the seat tube. The miter was tight and clean and has welded up nice.
I also met with the next client, Mark N, to get squared away with the details of his upcoming build- another Quisby will be rolling out. Mark is excited to try out the 27.5" platform, and he is no stranger to odd-ball wheels on the trail. Mark is over 6ft tall, and rides out on 24" wheeled Brooklyn rigid. He loves'm and owns 2, for now.
At the moment Brandon's Quisby will get its stays attached this weekend and most the brazed-ons added. We'll cross our fingers to complete it by next Friday.

New frame built. A beefcake of a fixed frame.
I'm calling it the QuickSliver. In homage to Quicksilver.
I only have 2 images of it's build process, as I busted my ass and wasted no time in fab'ing it up. I started it on Monday and finished it on Friday's early AM. Dropped it off at the powdercoater later on Friday and had it build by Saturday 5am.
It was on display at Fixed Fight 3.
The bike was a hit.
I've built it using lots of mountain bike componentry:

The Q-Muter has been put on hold... Another fixed gear project has hit the shop.
Here is what has happened thus far:

The top has it's rough cuts, and the seat tube is ready to go. I'm going to do a little more shaping of the top headtube lug. Angles of the jig are set too. Clean up the cuts and cut the DT and I can tack the front triangle!

The front Triangle is ready to be brazed, and I have the wishbone ready to be cut to length.

This is a pretty traditional build. 25.4mm Top tube, and 28.6 Seat tube and down tube. We went with a Stainless steel Long Shen dropout that will end up having a polished dropout face, so no paint will be damaged when the wheel is clamped into the frame. As you can see in the last image the seat tube has been brazed to the BB shell.

OK, the complete build is getting closer.
The tubes and lugs set in fixture ready for some brass love. Eye protection is key!!

Head tube Angles set, and locked down.

The white paste is flux, to protect the metal. It also helps the brass flow to the proper areas.

When brazing lugs, I like to start at the top of the lug. Heat the lug and tubes, then introduce the brass when the temps are right. The brass melts and begins to seep from the bottom of the lug, so you know when penetration has occured.

After the front triangle was tacked together (the rest of the brazing will be done outside of the fixture), I began cutting the chain stays to length and mitered the BB end of both stays.

The dropout/chain stay configuration will be a little different for this one. My assistant and I decided what kind of stays will used, as well as what type of seat stay style as well.

OK, this project is still in the works. I took a few days off as my family was in town from TX.
Anyways, I have the front triangle tubes mitered and ready to be brazed. I also added the fixing bolts for the EBB, as I am not using a Bushnell internal expanding version.
More progress.

And this one will be going to paint in a few days. Its a fixie/ ss road bike. 120mm track ends, but will accept a rear brake.

I will get some photos of the front triangle in the fixture this weekend. The lugs still need to be cleaned up before they are brazed. Also notice the water bottle bosses and reinforcements are ready to go, too. I will drill the boss holes next in the process. Happy New Year, folks.

Hi all, I am beginning work on my next frame. This time around I wanted to shed some light on the process and post a pictorial as the frame and bike come together. I am using the same design and geometry as my cross bike, so I already had the drawing. This time I will be using an EBB and vertical dropouts with disc tabs. It will also have canti studs to match the current fork I have for this build. It will be a lugged steel frame using True Temper Tubing. The lugs are a Paramount Anniversary set a friend gave me. Feel free to ask any questions regarding this project, and I will post photos as things develop.

Part 2

Ok, tonight I mitered the downtube and toptubes where they meet the headtube. Pretty routine. Lots of file action and such. Using lugs allows for some cheating, as the lug provides a method of tracing the miter. Very simple. BUT, you're pretty much stuck at using the lug's given angle.

Thanks for stopping by again.
We have a few frames built into completes. First came the cyclocross frame, the Qwjybo. Then the 650B MTB the Quisby. We've also got the 120Road frame the Luddite. The Luddy is waiting for paint, but the other 2 are built and being ridden. Below are some simple images of both built bikes. The Quisby is True Temper OX Platinum while the Qwjybo and Luddite are mixes from Reynolds and True Temper.
We have numerous tubing options with frames slated to begin production.
We have a Qwjybo in queue, and a flatland BMX frame on the drawing board, the QaBoom.
The next 2 frames will be photogaphed during the entire process. Keep an eye on the blog for updates.
